Two Florian Architects Projects Documented in the New AIA GUIDE TO CHICAGO
The new AIA GUIDE TO CHICAGO, published by the University of Illinois Press in fall 2014, cites as significant two Florian Architects projects: the Hyde Park Bank Loan Processing Center (now Wintrust Mortgage) on Elston Avenue and the renovated main banking hall of the historic Hyde Park Bank on 53rd Street.
The guide describes the 2,000-square-foot Elston Avenue office building, "Like the mouse that roared, this tiny outpost has a mighty presence that allows it to hold its own on a gritty industrial corridor. A black steel frame extends above the two-story box to convey monumentality."
The renovated main banking hall, which also appeared in the previous 2004 edition of the guide, is described, "The grandeur of the second-floor banking hall was restored and rejuvenated, with subtle modern materials such as metal mesh and translucent glass used to create new workspaces. A combination of new and restored lighting shows it all off."
Combined these two projects have won numerous design awards, including a national AIA Honor Award, an Illinois AIA Award, and two Chicago Chapter AIA Awards.
